The Apprentice: Is the show format/ Sir Alan getting a little tired?

This season's series of The Apprentice just isn't as compelling as past series have been. There are very few real personalities amongst the 'candidates'. Some members of the audience might consider that Vince added some much needed 'colour' - but he has now left the show after last week's shock double sacking.

I'm not sure how potential candidates pass the audition process, but there needs to be more rigorous selection of people with borderline psychopathic tendencies to provoke more audience interest.

Supersize vs Superskinny (Channel 4)

This evening it was hard not to feel for the supersize girl (a 20 stone plus young mother), who agreed to swap diets with a superskinny girl (of just 7 stone!!) on the documentary Supersize vs Superskinny. What made for uncomfortable viewing was 'Miss Superskinny' eating the mountainous meals - which consisted of a mainly takeaway food - usually consumed by 'Miss Supersize'. This exceptionally thin girl made some quite unpleasant comments about how greasy 'Miss Supersize's' diet was; which managed to reduce her to tears.

There seem to be a lot of programmes on TV, at the moment, which provide audiences with the opportunity to watch the discomfort of others for entertainment.

The Slumdog Millionaire Case Studies

I'm stating the obvious, but Blogs are a great platform for students to reflect and share information about all sorts of media.

Coming up soon are students reflections on the production, marketing, distribution and exhibition of Slumdog Millionaire - a film made on a tiny budget and with no Hollywood stars.

Katie:My Beautiful Friends (Channel 4)
This new reality TV series contributes to the growing need for more understanding of those with facial disfigurements.Imagine the horror of having your face melted by industrial strength sulphuric acid in an attack set up by a jealous ex-boyfriend; this is what changed Katie Piper's looks forever. Society is obsessed with conventional norms of beauty, but Katie shows extraordinary courage as she deals with her own difficulties and those faced by other young women who are battling for acceptance in our image obsessed world.

Rather than wallow in self pity after the attack Katie is shown setting up a charity to support those struggling to be accepted. She is out there raising awareness of the prejuduce and discrimination faced by those whose looks are usually the cause of frowns and stares by strangers. You can do at lot worse than watch this series which seeks to promote greater understanding of the lives of people who have to put up with unpleasant comments and consternation.
